Every year on October 24, the United Nations (UN) Day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the formation of United Nations. The day highlights the importance of world peace and security.
United Nations Day: History
In the final years of World War II, the concepts around the United Nations were developed, particularly during the UN Conference on International Organization in San Francisco beginning on April 25, 1945. The United Nations was officially formed when a UN charter was approved on October 24, 1945. On this day, the UN charter was ratified by the majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, and this marks the official establishment of the United Nations. The first United Nations Day was observed in 1948 on October 24. And, in 1971, the UN recommended the member states to observe the day as a public holiday to showcase the work, role and achievements of the organization and its family of specialized agencies, particularly towards human rights, support during famine, eradication of disease and settlement of refugees.
What Is UN?
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organisation whose main role is to maintain peace and security in the world. It plays an important role in developing friendly relations among countries, realize international cooperation and to be a centre of coordination for all nations. When the United Nations was established, it had 51 members, now the number of countries has increased to 193 member states. The United Nations has its headquarters in New York City. Its regional offices are located in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. The UN follows six official languages: English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and French.
Aim of the UN
The main purposes of the United Nations include to promote friendly relations among nations and encourage them in the fields of social progress, human rights and better living standards for all. It strives to maintain international peace, deliver humanitarian aid and to uphold international law and also prevent further wars.
The UN and Its Different Organizations
The UN is an intergovernmental organisation whose primary role is to maintain world peace and security. It does this by not work alone but together with many specialized agencies, including the World Bank, the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), overseeing different sectors.
Also, the UN has the following different organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the UN Secretariat.

With the support of 193 member states and through its many specialized agencies, the United Nations has powers to undertake a wide range of issues and act over it. Additionally, it works towards peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and conflict prevention around the world. The UN also tries to solve a variety of fundamental issues such as environment, sustainable development, disaster relief, counterterrorism, refugee protection, gender equality, women empowerment, economic and social development, food production, health and many more to secure the world for future generations.

This year as we mark the 77th anniversary, the theme is ‘End Racism and Build Peace’. The theme highlights the various global issues that are hindering in achieving the sustainable goals of the United Nations and focuses on the ways and ideas of tackling them in creating a better and secure future.
